Helvetica is a default - and that is basically the problem, I think. It is invisible.

I respect Helvetica, as one of the earliest usable fonts. But i wont say that i love it... i mean, its been used so much that it has become like a default.

I am never going to use it for any of my branding related projects !

Font guys more than welcome!
It IS funny and entertaining, and maybe I didn't get that across well enough.
What would be your pet-hate fonts, rdjahn?

It's funny - the book I am reading at the moment is set in van Dijck with a generous leading and flush right. I was wondering what it was going to be like reading hundreds and hundreds of pages - it works fine. I think what made me stare at the page initially, was the suprising leading. I must remember to buy more quality books.. The odd thing though, is that it is a dutch font in a very 1850s London story. Ach, well. I guess you can't have it all.

I saw this a few months ago as part of a general documentary kick, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, as I recall. I'm not really a design guy, but I am kind of a font guy, in that I can't read even a good book if it's printed with an ugly font. Anyway, I was rather impressed by the film's ability to keep me interested in a subject I'd been only vaguely aware of up till the minute I put in the DVD.

Haha!
My god, we should pick our principles with care.. There is a real danger of becoming ridiculous. Helvetica is not the work of the devil, but if I had that professor, I would perhaps think so.

When I was in Film School, I had one professor who would tolerate only Helvetica. Heaven help those whose projects featured Arial. Using Times New Roman was to be instantly damned.

Many thanks, Mr. Hoefler. Sweet - very enjoyable.

I realised I didn't say anything about the film itself. It seems a little too random, and the editing a tad haphazard. I see it is doing well as a download through iTunes.

It IS entertaining, but designers have a tendency to analyze things to death, I'm afraid. It is worth seeing, though. And even if some wants the sequel Helvetica Neue, I think this will do nicely, thank you.
