If you mirror the first picture, you will see that it in addition to "Dalsberg...." says a number (postal number 0770 ?) and "Correspondance" (possibly) and "Hverdager...." and "Lørdager..." (definitely!).

The font used should be dateable, I guess.

Backup, backup, backup is the mantra. It is easier and safer than anything else. Do not worry if it is all confusing, the tech world makes is so...

Of course, there are good reasons not to self-host, but I like the control, so I will also take the risk. The whole point of this site was originally be a digital playground for me to arse around with. Mission accomplished! :D

Hi Linda - hahaha, tissue paper, why not. My last cat was only interested in pencils. And I had a rat once, that loved envelopes with windows in them. Crinkly heaven.

It seems to me we do not really have language to deal with other species other than in either a anthropomorphcal way or scientifically. It is odd. We either describe them like us, or we describe them entirely detached.

Hello, Linda!
Glad you enjoy my britishisms :-) DC did not convert me to am-en. I confounded them at times with word like chuffed, dander (for a wee walk) and such. Ah, the joy of confusing people in their own mother tongue!

Genealogy can quickly become an obsession, but as I found the royal lines, I thought it amusing but in a way less interesting. I wanted the little stories, like the amusing hat, and time-relevance. Such as - oh, I don´t know, - people dying from the black death, tuberculosis etc. Something that would give a sense of deeper time. Royal lines are so full of nonsense, myths and intrigue, as as you get back to year 1000 or so, it might all be lies, powerplay and smokescreens.

I am currently looking at my great grandfathers lines, and that might reveal more of the small tales. Four siblings emigrated to USA, a guy executed by the nazis in 43 for being in the resistance. That sort of thing. I do not think I shall let this take over my life, but it makes me happy to now and then say "if you do not behave, loyal subject, She shall knock you over the head with Her Globus cruciger". :-D

I have a friend who is deeply involved with tracing her lineage. She's Italian, and I'm not certain what century she's living in just now, but there's no question that, if you become serious about this stuff, you can lose your moorings in the present and begin walking around muttering about things that happened in 1288 as though they're the latest headlines.

I'm interested in one line of my family - whom I've finally traced back to County Down. I pretty much stopped there, sang "The Star of the County Down" a few times and let it lay. But it is interesting, and I suspect would be even moreso - for me - if there were other generations who might be even vaguely interested in the findings. But I'm the end of the line - at least the obvious line - so I'll do other things.

I do love the funny hat on the head story. And I couldn't help but notice the word "chuffed". I've only seen that word in the blog of an English woman I regularly read. I think it's the funniest word in the world. For some reason, it makes me think of a partridge - all chuffed up in the snow.

Great entry - have fun with your time travels!

Such a spot-on discussion. I smiled in recognition at several points. I happen to have another of those no-lap-for-me-thank-you kitties. She loves being brushed, however, and that is our point of contact - once in the morning while I drink my first cup of coffee, and at night just before she begins her evening prowl around the house.

You're right about the "toys", too. Her favorite is tissue paper. I put several sheets on the floor. Over the course of a few days, she shreds it. I throw it away and give her fresh tissue. We're both happy.

Before the two of us began getting along really well, I had to learn a lesson: let her be who she is, and don't expect her to fulfill the stereotype of the "nice kitty". Perhaps that would work with people, too.

Ach, Danielle!
I never thought we would disagree much on this :-D the trend to make animals into replacement babies is a little disturbing, though, it is indeed humiliating for both species involved. Enjoying physical contact with human beings does not define the value of a creature.

Every time I see a dog in a coat or otherwise ridiculous "outfit," I cringe (never mind the idea of carrying a dog in a purse). Maybe that is because I was raised with outdoor cats and dogs who seemed to have fine lives, but maybe it's also because it seems like such a humiliating thing for our species to do to another. In fact, we have a cat that most people hate, because she doesn't like to be in physical contact with people (near people is okay, touching people is out of the question), but that's precisely why I like her.

Thanks for the common ground!
